My Top Tips for Prepping Your Furniture for Chalk Paint

I am sharing my top tips for prepping furniture for painting or refinishing. Do you ever see a piece of furniture and think, “Wow, that would look great if it was a different color?” or have a piece of furniture you would love to give new life with a little paint? Painting furniture is not hard with Dixie Belle Mineral Chalk Paint.  As a matter of fact, any mineral chalk paint you use says “No prep, just clean and paint”.  That is mostly true, but sometimes you have to do a little prep work before you start painting.

Here are my Top Tips for Prepping Furniture for Mineral Chalk Paint.

First, remove any hardware such as handles, decorative accents you don’t want to keep. You can reuse the handles or decorative accents, but it is easier to paint the furniture with these items removed. Next, remove the drawers and set them aside. You can leave any drawer guides, those do not have to be removed. The faces of the drawers will need to be treated in the same manner as the exterior of the furniture.

2. Repair any scratches, holes, cracks, peeling laminate, etc with wood filler. I like to use Elmer’s Carpenters Color Change Wood Filler.  Let the wood filler dry for 24 hours before you sand. I use a 150 grit sandpaper then a fine sanding sponge on the area that has been repaired. If the piece has a shiny laminate surface, I use a fine sanding sponge to give the surface a little roughing up. This helps your paint adhere to the surface. It does not  need to be a heavy sanding. The emphasis is on the light sanding. Now, technically this step is not necessary with Dixie Belle Mineral Chalk Paint, BUT I am over-cautious when it comes to shiny surfaces and laminates. Better to take that extra step then to be sorry down the road.

3. Wipe down the piece of furniture with a soft cloth. You can purchase tack cloths and use those or you can use an old t-shirt.  I go for the old t-shirt.  I tend to have a bunch of those around. In fact, I keep an old metal wash tub full of rags and old t-shirts just for the furniture refinishing.  Using the soft cloth to wipe off any loose dirt and dust from the furniture creates a good base for you to paint.

You are almost done prepping your furniture for chalk paint!

4. Time to Clean! Break out the gloves and get to washing. What is the best product to use? TSP is a name brand cleaner that is great for cleaning furniture before painting. Another option is Dixie Belle Mineral Paint White Lightning. White Lightning is easy to use and gets your furniture super, super clean. With both the TSP and the White Lightning you will have to go back over the piece of furniture with a damp cloth. You don’t want to leave any cleaner behind. The last 2 options are 1) Hot Soapy Water, now this is a handy alternative but does not always get the dirt and grime off the piece of furniture. 2) Murphy’s Oil Soap and Hot Water, again, handy alternative and easy to use. Just can’t always guarantee the hot soapy water will get all the dirt and grime off your furniture. If you piece is not really dirty, no worries then! Hot soapy water will work great!

5. You have finished prepping your furniture to chalk paint and now it is TIME to paint! Be creative and have fun. I would love to see pictures of your finished project. Do you have any additional hints or tips? Please share!

Let Me Introduce Myself

Vaverek Family, Carter Sonya Caroline Emily and Connor
The Family

Hey Y’all! Welcome to my blog.

I would love to take a few moments to introduce myself and give you an overview of my blog.  My name is Sonya and I am a Floridian living in Georgia. We love it here, but I miss the beach.  That is the one thing I wish we had here in Georgia, beautiful white sand and emerald green waters.  Sorry, got distracted daydreaming of the sand and waves.

My husband, Carter, and I have lived in Georgia for 20 years. We have 3 children -Caroline is 19 and a freshman in college, Emily is 17 and Connor is 14, both still in high school.  We have 3 fur babies, Honey Bear is our old lady, a sweet and spoiled Mini-Wire Hair Dachshund, Daisy and Maggie are Basset Hound sisters. (just a note that it is not easy to get good pictures of them. I will work on that.)

I am an interior designer and avid DIYer. I have always loved creating a warm, comfortable home and re-purposing furniture. I want my clients to come home and LOVE their spaces. I am also a self taught artist: I love to create in paints, fabric and clay.

Carter is the handyman; he repairs and builds any crazy ideas I come up with at any given moment.  Sometimes he scratches his head at my crazy ideas, but he always makes them work! He is very talented and I will show you some of the crazy stuff I have him build for me.
With this blog I will share my tips, tricks, and DIY ideas, a few recipes, and lots of info on refinishing furniture and accessories.

I will also show off some of our adventures on our homestead we call Renegade Ranch, and some peeks at our fun loving family and friends. We hope you will join us and come back often to say “Hey” .
